Our Journey
Our Journey as a dye free family started back in 2022. We were dealing with a lot of behavioral issues with our eldest daughter. Being a family that tries to live as natural as possible we did not believe that medicating her was the right option for us. So I dug deeper, maybe a little too deep into what could be causing all of her emotional regulation issues. Dyes was our main starting point. After cutting out dyes from our everyday life we saw a huge change. The huge emotional meltdowns suddenly became a lot less frequent and a lot more manageable for everyone. She was a sweet, kind, loving and fun girl to be around again. So we stuck with it. We are going on our second year now and even our daughter will advocate for herself. She will tell you she cant have dyes because she doesn't like what it does to her body. This is incredible you guys! Having a 7 year old notice how awful these things are for her and that it makes her someone she doesn't want to be. I couldn't be more proud of her.
Where are number dyes found?
Unfortunately, the presence of dyes in our food is not the only concern we should have. These artificial colorants can also be found in our daily household cleaning products, personal care items, and beauty products. It is alarming to realize that these dyes are present in various aspects of our lives, exposing us to potential health risks. Whether it is the vibrant colors in our favorite cleaning solutions or the pigments in our beauty products, we must be cautious of the potential harm that these dyes can cause. Therefore, it is crucial to carefully read labels and opt for products that are free from harmful dyes, ensuring our overall well-being and safety.
I know what you're probably thinking, why does it matter if I am not ingesting it. Which is a valid question, and I am happy to help answer that. If I told you that our skin was our biggest organ and took in 60-70% of what we put on it within an average of 26 seconds would you believe me? Because that is exactly what it does. Our skin is soaking up 60-70% of everything it comes in contact with. Lotions, soaps, skin care products, self tanner. Everything you are putting on it is being sucked up in as little as 26 seconds. I don't know about you but I am not risking DNA altering and therefor cancer causing materials/chemicals in through my skin.
What do Dyes do to our body?
Food dyes are harmful to our health as they have been associated with various ailments. Red #40, Yellow #5, and Yellow #6, in particular, are known to be carcinogens. Additionally, several studies have indicated that yellow #5 has tested positive for genotoxicity. Genotoxicity refers to the ability of chemical agents to cause damage to the genetic material present in cells, resulting in the occurrence of mutations. These mutations have the potential to initiate the development of cancer. When a substance is genotoxic, it has the ability to interact with DNA, causing changes in its structure or sequence. This can result in the formation of unstable DNA molecules, which can lead to errors in replication and transcription processes. Ultimately, these errors can accumulate and give rise to mutations, which can have serious consequences for the cell's functionality and potentially lead to the development of cancerous tumors. These findings raise concerns about the safety of consuming products containing these food dyes. It is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with these additives and to make informed choices when it comes to our food consumption. Opting for natural food coloring alternatives are going to be a better choice for overall health.
